Hello Ujangsan Park (for drawing day)!

October 12, 2010

Last year, I went to a nearby park, Ujangsan, to watch students make art for ten minutes and goof off for the rest of the day. Monday, I did the same thing.

Something’s a little different this year  though. For some reason, I have really connected with the first graders and so that has made me privvy to hang out time, conversations about boys, and a really awkward and bizarre discussion on breast sizes.*

First graders were even happy to show me their work as I ambled about trying to beat the cold breeze blowing through and a bad case of boredom. Oh, and what I now know to be the first signs of an atrocious flu virus going around.

Aren’t students talented? I never recall an art field trip when I was in middle school….I would’ve hated to draw trees anyway I guess.

*This all started from one girl accusing another of stuffing her bra with paper. Said bra stuffer then accused the other girl of being a size 80A. No sooner than five minutes later, I was surrounded by a gaggle of middle school girls shouting English words about breasts and shape and size. At one point there was silence and I was permitted to turn the fiasco into an afterschool special moment. I said something like you’re only 13 and your body’s changing and there are many kinds of beautiful. This was a seemingly satisfactory answer for most who were listening.

One student, however, persisted in trying to convince me that her bust was down to her bellybutton. It’s important to note that this is that same girl who stuffs her shirt and who goes by the name Crazy Monster Octopus Girl. I’ll be leaving the afterschool specials to the professionals from now on.

She likes to visit my desk with her friends who call her all kinds of English words. So when I ask her name she just regurgitates what they say and then makes me remember every little crazy thing she’s ever been called…it’s something like Crazy Monster Octopus Dancing Hungry Boy-Girl at this point.
