Project Noraebang

September 17, 2009

Every weekday, I make my way to school via a 15 minute walk along a four-laned road of numerous intersections that peel off into nameless streets and dank alleys. I don’t live downtown, mind you, but there’s a fair amount of traffic going through the area. The day after my Noraebang experience in Hongdae, I started noticing the name of Noraebangs in my area. The very first word I learned to identify in Korean was “noraebang” and so for me it’s fun to pick them out. I did so and noticed that there are A LOT of them on my short walk to school.

Even in a  dense city, I think you’ll be hard pressed to find this number of a single type of establishment anywhere. I literally sat down the other day and tried to come up with the DC equivalent…um well maybe bars. Not even close. Let’s take a look shall we?

Did you count 15? Yes, 15 Noraebangs on a single street on the way to school. And it takes about 5 minutes of my walk to cross the street, so that works out to about maybe a Noraebang every 40 seconds? Is that much competition/saturation even profitable? One might guess the very economy of my area relied on the success of the Noraebangs infesting it.

Maybe I’ll get more photos during my stay here…this absolutely fascinates me.

Are they like nightclubs? Are they only open at night or during the day as well? Do they serve food? Are there dancing ladies? Have you been inside one? Now, of course, I’m intrigued, very intrigued…ummm. Karoke?

I have been in one…you basically pay for an hour in a room set up with sofas, a giant tv and some drinks. It’s a really nice room that can fit maybe 10 people but I doubt they want you doing any serious eating. Heaven forbid you dilute the alcohol necessary to perform the noraebang anyway. The tv is equipped with some kind of program that allows you to select from thousands of songs and then shows the words. It grades you at the end but I hear that it’s just a random number generator.
